My breakthrough came when I got a job transfer and moved from upstate NY to sunny Florida. In August. It soon became painfully obvious that I could no longer camoflage my flab with layers of clothing. Too hot! No more hiding behind black clothes down here, no-siree-bob! And we won't even discuss bathing suits at this point...Being overweight in hot weather is most uncomfortable.
I've been staying at my parents' house in this gated community with all kinds of amenities, which got me thinking: being fat was keeping me from enjoying all the great things about my new environment. But now that I had plenty of free time, the weather was nice every day, the beach was nearby and I had a pool and fitness room at my disposal, FOR FREE, I realized I'd be a fool not to take advantage of all this.
I made a mental start date of October 1st. Prior to that, I readied myself by purging the house of "bad food" and making sure I had weather appropriate workout gear, and good shoes. I went shopping and bought healthy food and started fresh that Friday. They say the most effective diet for you is the one you make up yourself, so I took bits and pieces of all the previous diets I'd been on and only used the ones that worked, to come up with this weird hybrid diet that would probably only work for me. The only hard and fast rules were that I was to expend more calories than I consumed, and it had to be from a variety of food groups, i.e no consuming only ice cream (I know some of you have tried this!), and I had to exercise every day and drink 8 glasses of water per day. I've been using a website calorie counter to keep track of calories eaten and expended, and to track my exercise, which I will discuss in future posts. And, of course, I weighed in at the start and will weigh in again one week from that date.
This is only Day 3 and I feel better already. I can't wait until Friday!
